LETTER FROM THE EDITOR - VOL. 8
KCCNYC Monthly - Jan. 2025
By Eun Byoul Oh
January 13th is Korean American Day. Happy Korean American Day to every Korean American in the U.S. and abroad. In this volume of KCCNYC Monthly, we celebrate Korean American identity and culture with our students.
The Korean Culture Center in New York (KCCNYC) was initially established to provide Korean language and culture education to Korean Americans. Priscilla, our director, often talks about how she felt the need to teach the next generation of Korean Americans.
Priscilla came to the U.S. in 1992 as an international student to get her Master’s Degree in voice and conducting. She conducted a choir at a big Korean church in Queens and she also taught Korean to children in her church. She often tells our staff how she dreamed of finding an organization for Korean Americans outside of churches, and founded KCCNYC.
Established in the 2000s, The Korean Culture Center has now become a place of learning and sharing Korean culture for everyone, and has expanded its mission to the wider U.S. audience. Nevertheless, I wanted to take the time to reiterate the beginnings of KCCNYC and also extend my gratitude to our students with Korean heritage who have always been supportive of our missions.
At the dawn of regime change in the U.S., we also remember the DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) children, who have now become adults in the U.S. society, and how immigration policies impact those who are in the Korean-American community.
Please take some time to read the wonderful stories of our Korean-American students this month. KCCNYC Monthly Team will continue to bring exciting Korean culture and insightful Korean news to your inbox in 2025.
새해 복 많이 받으세요. Happy New Year!
